Mavis Helen (Liptow) Coomer was born during a cold snap on January 7, 1937 in Beloit, Wisconsin and passed away in Janesville surrounded by her loving family on January 26, 2026. The third child and oldest girl of seven kids. Mavis met Harmon “Bud” Coomer in 1952 where their decades-long love story began. At 17 and 16 years old, Bud and Mavis got married and shortly after started a family with the surprise delivery of twins! Over time, the family grew to five kids.

During her working years, Mavis held various jobs—Woolworths lunch counter in Janesville, Apco shirt factory in Brodhead. Bud and Mavis owned and operated the little Naber Inn in the 1970s, a local hot spot for burgers and fries after high school sporting events. By the late 70s, the little Naber Inn was sold, and Bud and Mavis built and were part-owners and operators of Cardinal Lanes bowling alley and restaurant in Brodhead. Mavis spent a lot of time cooking and baking in those kitchens. Starting in the 1980s, Mavis transitioned to her most loved job running an in-home daycare. Over the years, many children went to Grandma Coomer’s house.

Mavis loved decorating and preparing for holidays and hosted large family gatherings on many occasions. She loved to play cards, especially euchre and canasta. She loved to bowl, and her dedication paid off the year she and her team rolled their way to a state championship victory. Mavis was always ready with her camera and kept meticulously organized photos albums. Bud and Mavis spent many summers at their place on Crystal Lake in Lodi, Wisconsin where Mavis enjoyed fishing. Her loved ones will always remember her home baked treats and her yearly birthday cards.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Harmon “Bud” Coomer; her sister, Jeanne Phillips, brother-in-law, Richard Brueggeman; her five children Helen LaBorde, Charles (Helen) Coomer, Beverly Shrier (Randy Stifter), Steven Coomer, and Laurie (Cliff Sheppard) LaBarre, and family member Paul LaBarre.
